You can see that EHP definitely does have diminishing returns, and in fact our champion will never get over 200k effective HP, no matter how much defense they have (at least, not without other sources of mitigation like masteries - but since those are multiplicative, we can ignore them here).īut you can also see that there's really nothing special happening at 4200. Using the defense formula above, here is a graph of effective HP against defense for our 30k-HP champion. That is, effective HP is the amount of damage it takes to kill you through your mitigation. Calculating effective HP is simple: by definition, It measures the amount of damage you can survive, and so it is the most meaningful way to compare survivability between champions with different amounts of HP and defense.

This is called "effective HP", or EHP for short.

So going from 50% mitigation to 75% mitigation makes them twice as hard to kill, not just 25% harder. If you give the same champion 75% mitigation, it now takes 120k damage to kill them. If you have a champion with 30k HP and 50% mitigation, then it takes 60k raw damage (before mitigation) to kill them. What matters is how much damage you take that's the thing that actually kills you. Well, not really! It doesn't matter how much damage you prevent. At 4200 defense, you get about 80% mitigation, so that's pretty close to maxed out, right? As you can see, mitigation will never go above 85%. Here's a graph of mitigation versus defense. 85 * (1 - e -Defense/1500).Į is a mathematical constant, roughly 2.72. I'm going to lay out some math and explain the reasoning involved.ĭefense works according to the following formula: This is fine as a rule of thumb, but I think it is worth pointing out that it should not be taken literally, because it's not actually true. This was just the most recent example I could think of. I don't mean to pick specifically on HH here I've seen similar advice elsewhere. After that, start building up either your damage or your HP levels. When you're working out your team comps, especially for clan boss, just remember 4200 is the max you want to go for. After that, you don't really mitigate any more damage. So, one of the other things that we should just throw out there is that defense caps around 4200. If you watch guides or content creators, you will sometimes see something like this statement thrown around:
